Potential Data Breach Fine = $885,000,000,000

Another potential cost of not protecting your data are fines imposed by the government. In this instance, First American Financial Corp is allegedly on the hook for not fixing data leaks.

The New York Department of Financial Services announced this week, that First American will be the defendant in their first ever “cybersecurity enforcement action.”

Allegedly, First American’s exposed client information, approximately 885,000,000 records, and was breached over an extended period of time. Given that each violation is potentially $1,.000 per occurrence, that is a total of a $885 billion fine.
